The Prophet's Blessings and Islamic Wedding Traditions
Weddings are a cornerstone of many cultures, celebrated as a joyous union and a significant life milestone. The Islamic tradition places particular emphasis on marriage, as evidenced in the Quran. Allah commands Muslims to marry and encourages the creation of righteous families. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) exemplified the importance of marriage by offering his blessings and well wishes to newlyweds.
Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala says in the Holy Quran:
And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-encompassing and Knowing. (surah-Nur-32)
But let them who find not [the means for] marriage abstain [from sexual relations] until Allah enriches them from His bounty. And those who seek a contract [for eventual emancipation] from among whom your right hands possess - then make a contract with them if you know there is within them goodness and give them from the wealth of Allah which He has given you. And do not compel your slave girls to prostitution, if they desire chastity, to seek [thereby] the temporary interests of worldly life. And if someone should compel them, then indeed, Allah is [to them], after their compulsion, Forgiving and Merciful. (surah-nur-33)
Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, Whoever Allah provides with a righteous wife, Allah has assisted him in half of his religion. Let him fear Allah regarding the second half. Source: al-Mu’jam al-Awsaṭ 992
This hadith underscores the spiritual significance of marriage and the importance of seeking a righteous spouse.
According to Islamic law, people enter a new life through marriage. We congratulate the newlyweds in various ways on weddings. The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to wish the newlyweds well in their married life.
Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said, When the Prophet (ﷺ) congratulated a man on his marriage, he said:(بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ) May Allah bless for you, and may He bless on you, and combine both of you in good (works).(Sunan Abi Dawud 2130)
The tradition of congratulating newlyweds and offering blessings is deeply rooted in Islamic teachings and continues to be a cherished custom among Muslims worldwide.
Every Muslim should recite the prayer taught by the Messenger of Allah during the wedding ceremony, wishing the well-being of the newlyweds. May Allah bless each of us with goodness in our married life. Amen.
