What the Prophet (SAW) Taught About Rows in Salah – And Why It’s Important Today

The Purpose of Life and the Role of Salah in Unity

Allah Ta'ala sent mankind to this world solely to worship Him. This purpose is outlined in the Quran, where Allah says:

"I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me." (Surah Adh-Dhariyat, 51:56)

For us, the Ummah of Rasulullah (SAW), the five daily prayers (Salah) are a core part of worship, made obligatory by Allah. These prayers are not just individual acts of devotion but also a means of fostering unity and discipline among believers. Through Salah, Muslims stand shoulder to shoulder, irrespective of their social status, wealth, or ethnicity, reinforcing the concept of equality and brotherhood in Islam.

The Prophet (SAW) emphasized the importance of performing Salah in the congregation, particularly in the mosque. This not only strengthens community bonds but also enhances the spiritual reward. The collective performance of Salah creates a sense of togetherness and accountability, serving as a reminder that the Ummah is united under one Creator and one purpose.

The Importance of Rows in Congregational Salah

In addition to highlighting the significance of Salah in the congregation, the Prophet (SAW) provided clear guidance on how to stand in rows during prayer. The arrangement of rows is not a trivial matter; it reflects discipline, organization, and respect for the sanctity of Salah.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said:

"Complete the front row first, and then the rows that follow. If there is any deficiency, let it be in the last row." (Abu Dawood, 671)

This directive emphasizes the importance of filling the front row before starting subsequent rows. Despite this, many worshippers show a lack of enthusiasm for completing the front row. This issue is further compounded by the fact that in many mosques, imams do not actively encourage worshippers to straighten the rows or fill the front row before beginning the prayer.

In some cases, the congregation may lack awareness of the virtues and etiquettes associated with standing in rows. This often results in a casual approach to something the Prophet (SAW) explicitly emphasized.

The Virtues of the Front Row

The Prophet (SAW) mentioned the immense reward associated with standing in the front row during Salah. He said:

"If they knew the virtue of the front row, they would definitely compete for it." (Bukhari, 721)

This Hadith highlights that the front row holds a special place in the sight of Allah. It is a position of greater closeness to the imam and, by extension, a symbol of eagerness to obey Allah's commands.

The reluctance of some worshippers to step forward was noticed even during the time of the Prophet (SAW). Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) observed this hesitation and said:

"Come forward and follow my example, and let those behind you follow your example. A group of people will always delay standing in the first row, and Allah will also delay them in return." (Muslim)

This warning serves as a reminder that delaying one's presence in the first row reflects a lack of urgency in seeking the pleasure of Allah. It may also result in missing out on spiritual rewards and blessings.

The Role of Imams and the Community

Imams play a crucial role in educating the congregation about the etiquettes of Salah, including the importance of straightening rows and filling the front row. Before starting the prayer, imams should encourage the worshippers to ensure the rows are aligned and complete. This practice not only adheres to the Sunnah but also instills a sense of discipline and respect for the collective nature of Salah.

Unfortunately, in many mosques, this aspect is often overlooked. The lack of awareness among worshippers further exacerbates the problem. It is the responsibility of both imams and the community to create a culture where the importance of completing rows is understood and practiced.

Salah as a Reflection of Unity and Discipline

The arrangement of rows during Salah is symbolic of the unity and discipline that Islam promotes. When worshippers stand shoulder to shoulder, it eliminates distinctions based on wealth, status, or ethnicity. It is a powerful reminder that in the eyes of Allah, all believers are equal.

Moreover, straight rows reflect the organized and systematic nature of Islamic teachings. Allah loves those who act with precision and order, as He says in the Quran:

"Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in rows as though they are a single structure joined firmly." (Surah As-Saff, 61:4)

If such discipline is required in battle, how much more important is it in the act of worship? By adhering to the Prophet's instructions regarding rows, Muslims can demonstrate their commitment to following his example and maintaining the unity of the Ummah.

Call to Action

It is imperative for all Muslims to understand and implement the teachings of the Prophet (SAW) regarding Salah. Worshippers should strive to be among those who eagerly step forward to fill the front rows, seeking the immense rewards promised by Allah.

Imams and mosque committees should take an active role in educating the congregation and ensuring that the Sunnah is upheld. By fostering a culture of awareness and enthusiasm for completing the rows, the community can enhance its collective worship and strengthen its bond.

May Allah Ta'ala grant us the correct understanding of Islam and enable us to practice its teachings with sincerity. May He guide us to be among those who value the virtues of Salah and strive to fulfill its etiquettes, seeking His pleasure in every act of worship.
