Wedding Feasts and the Mentality of Some Uncivilized Guests

In Bengali culture, weddings are grand occasions where hospitality plays a significant role. It’s not just about eating but also about fostering goodwill, respect, and a sense of togetherness. Unfortunately, some people take undue advantage of this tradition. Among them are those who attend wedding feasts solely for meat, ignoring other dishes like lentils, vegetables, and side items, showcasing their selfish mentality. Even worse, some guests criticize the hosts after enjoying the meal, which is utterly disgraceful.

The Mentality of Eating Only Meat: Greed or Uncivilized Behavior?

The primary purpose of wedding feasts is to satisfy and honor guests, yet some individuals misuse this opportunity by focusing only on consuming meat, be it beef or mutton. To them, lentils, vegetables, or other delicacies seem insignificant! However, every dish served at a wedding is a token of love and respect from the hosts. Their one-track mindset prioritizes personal gain over appreciating the hospitality and efforts of the hosts.

Criticizing After Enjoying a Feast: The Height of Ingratitude

Even more disgraceful than selective eating is the act of badmouthing the hosts after being served. Some guests criticize the taste, the expense of the arrangements, or other aspects of the event, despite having been treated to a complete meal for free. This is nothing but the peak of ingratitude.

When someone invites you wholeheartedly, they are offering you their best within their means. Yet, some people repay this kindness with slander and complaints. Such behavior is not just a sign of low moral character but also a blatant disregard for social etiquette. These individuals deserve strong condemnation.

How to Counter This Mentality

  1. Respect Cultural Values: When attending a wedding, guests should appreciate the hosts’ efforts and honor the variety of food served.
  2. Practice Moderation: Instead of being driven by greed and consuming only meat, guests should enjoy a balanced meal.
  3. Avoid Criticism: Instead of finding faults, guests should be grateful for the hospitality they receive.
  4. Raise Awareness: Society should speak up against such behavior so that people feel discouraged from repeating it in the future.

A wedding feast is not just about food; it’s a celebration of relationships and hospitality. Those who attend merely for meat and later disrespect the hosts reveal their ignorance and selfishness. To build a more respectful and considerate society, we must abandon such disgraceful behavior and uphold proper social etiquette. A better society starts with individuals who appreciate, respect, and reciprocate kindness rather than exploit it.
