Extremism vs. True Islamic Values: Lessons from Recent Incidents in Bangladesh
The Role of Islamic Scholars in Addressing Modern-Day Controversies
The recent incidents in Bangladesh, known as the "Cigarette Incident" and the "Orna (scarf) Incident," are part of a deliberate attempt to once again put the country under international scrutiny. The primary objective behind these events is to create controversy surrounding Muslims, question Islam, create divisions among Muslims, and distort Islamic values.
The individuals who prevented girls from smoking cigarettes in public are not recognized Islamic scholars of the country. Rather, they may have acted from a social or moral standpoint. However, they lack the necessary qualifications to interpret such matters from an Islamic perspective.
On the other hand, if we closely examine the individual involved in the "Orna (scarf) Incident," we will see that she has not shaped her life according to Islamic principles. Her words, family environment regarding modesty, and overall behavior indicate that she was influenced by external forces to take such action.
The core issue behind these incidents is the extremist mindset of certain individuals. They have become so involved in these matters that they believe it is solely their responsibility to establish Islam. However, in reality, they lack fundamental Islamic knowledge. They fail to embody the true essence of Islam—peace, compassion, and tolerance. This makes it clear that these extremists are trying to tarnish the image of Islam by creating confusion and controversy.
We are witnessing that many Islamic thinkers are unable to properly analyze these events within the framework of Islam. Instead, they are unknowingly falling into the trap of controversy based on misleading information spread by extremists.
In this situation, Islamic scholars should carefully verify information and analyze these issues with authentic knowledge and wisdom from an Islamic perspective. They should not hastily express opinions based on misleading information. Instead, through accurate analysis, they must convey the true message of Islam to the general public.
Islam provides clear guidelines regarding women’s dignity, social discipline, and morality. However, implementing these principles should not be enforced through coercion but rather through Da’wah (inviting to Islam), good conduct, and a humane approach.
According to Islamic teachings, it is essential to maintain gentleness and courtesy while advising others. Islam does not support abruptly preventing someone or publicly shaming them. Instead, the Qur'an and Hadith emphasize inviting people to righteousness through kind words and respectful behavior.
